Nonprofits help with world in more ways than one

GreenIf your company employs environmentally friendly practices, then you know “being green” isn’t always easy. In fact, sometimes it can be downright hard.

Perhaps no one knows this better than environmental nonprofit organizations. They find themselves in an unusually sticky situation: In order to promote their environmentally friendly message, they must attract donors and keep current supporters happy. Yet, to do this, they must employ methods — a la marketing — that hurt the environment. The method most often used, direct mail, requires the use of paper, ink, and energy — which entails the use of petroleum-based goods and nonrenewable resources and cutting down trees. Read more…

GreenWhat is an Urban Heat Island? And why should you care? Depends on who you ask.

An Urban Heat Island (UHI) is a metropolitan area that is significantly warmer than its surroundings. The buildings, concrete, asphalt, and human and industrial activity of urban areas have caused cities to maintain higher temperatures than their surrounding countryside. The air in a UHI can be as much as 20°F higher than rural areas surrounding the city. Read more…

Driving green in 2008

GreenWith the 2008 North American Auto Show just behind us, everyone has gotten a taste of what the future holds for earth friendly vehicles. Among the popular concepts was the Chevy Volt. This car has GM’s E-Flex Propulsion System which allows it to run on electricity, biodiesel, gasoline, or E85.

It is also capable of getting 150 MPG, running 40 miles without using a single drop of gasoline (when fully charged), and can charge certain small electronic devices without plugging them in. Read more…
